Jon Favreau tries to convince the Russo brothers not to kill Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, “You can’t do that. It’s going to ruin people.”
Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame was arguably the biggest moment in Infinity Saga, but now it turns out that the director of the original 2008 Iron Man — Jon Favreau — — Attempting to save the character of Robert Downey Jr. from his ultimate fate in an epic ensemble blockbuster. To promote their latest Netflix film The Greys, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently appeared on Vanity Fair’s YouTube series to break down some of the most iconic scenes from their previous projects. Turning to Endgame, the brothers revealed that Jon Favreau had tried to stop them from killing Iron Man at the end of the movie.
“Part of the pressure came from Jon Favreau, who called us after reading the script and said, ‘Are you really going to kill Iron Man?'” Anthony said. “I remember pacing around the corner of the stage on the phone and Favreau trying to convince him to get off the ledge,” Joe chimed in. “Because he was like, ‘You can’t do this. It’s going to destroy people, and you don’t want them, you know, to get out of the theater and into traffic.
Of course, the Russo brothers “did it anyway,” with the departure of Chris Evans as Captain America, setting a new trajectory for the MCU’s future phases, with new superheroes like Shang Chi, Eternal Family and various Disney+ projects replace the outgoing Avengers.
