Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he turned down the role of a fighter in Top Gun: Maverick.
Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton recently revealed he was offered the chance to play the role of a fighter pilot in this summer’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, but turned it down.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the F1 driver explained that if it weren’t for his F1 season schedule, he would have had the opportunity to jump in the cockpit and ride alongside Tom Cruise. He told the publication that he had spoken to his friend Cruise, who had been a longtime cast member of the original Top Gun. . Hamilton said, “When I heard the second one was coming out, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to ask him.'” He told Cruise, “I don’t care what character it is. I even Will sweep some things, be a cleaner in the back.” Maverick himself agreed to have Hamilton as one of the pilots, however, he was unable to fill the role when filming clashed with Hamilton’s F1 season. Hamilton, a self-described “perfectionist,” believes he won’t be able to do cinematic justice if he has to allocate his time.
Hamilton claimed that the call asking Cruise to turn down the role was “the most disturbing call I think I’ve ever had”. Hamilton is entering the entertainment world with Brad Pitt for an upcoming untitled Formula 1 film. Top Gun: Maverick was a huge success last weekend, grossing more than $1.35 billion worldwide.
