David Bruckner’s New ‘Hellraiser’ Debuts Female Needles, ‘It’s Not a Remake.’
David Bruckner has now shared a first look at his upcoming Hellraiser reboot as well as the new female Pinhead.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director reflected on the impact of the original Hellraiser in 1987 on his youth. “It’s so heartfelt and so impactful,” the filmmaker said. “It’s a movie that scares me so much. It’s digging into something so disturbing that I’m almost scared of whoever created it!”
He then went on to explain that the upcoming movie will not be a remake. “This is not a remake,” Bruckner continued. “I just don’t think you’ll ever be able to remake the original Hellraiser. It’s overkill, and I think it’s dangerous territory for filmmakers because how do you go beyond that? It’s a new story in the Hellraiser universe.”
As for the meaning of the story, the director said his vision of Hellraiser revolves around a girl named Riley, portrayed by Odessa A’zion. “This is the story of a young woman struggling with addiction and compulsive behavior who accidentally came into contact with a box and unfortunately started dabbling in it,” explains Bruckner. “With that comes chaos.” There will also be a new spin on Pinhead, now portrayed by Jamie Clayton, whose previous work includes Sense8, Designated Survivor and Disclosure.
