“Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told fans not to “take it too seriously” and “Challenge” will bring the “Squid Game” competition to life with huge cash prizes.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk assured fans of a spinoff of his show, dubbed Squid Game: The Challenge, telling them not to “take things too seriously.”
Shortly after the 2022 Emmys, the show and its cast garnered historic victories such as Outstanding Director of a Drama Series for “Red Lights and Green Lights”, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-jae and many more — Hwang revealed that he has met the creators of The Challenge. “I think while our show does have a pretty heavy message — and I know there’s some qualms about translating that into a reality show and getting a cash prize,” he said. “However, I feel like when you take things too seriously, it’s really not the best way for the entertainment industry. It doesn’t really set a good precedent.”
He continued, “I would say that replication of this effort will bring new meaning to the industry, and I hope it will be a great new direction for the industry as a whole.”
The challenge will see matches in Squid Game come to life with real rivals, without dying. A $4.56 million “life-changing” cash prize is up for grabs, and Netflix is currently casting open casts for its 456 competitors.
