Seeing Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston in the first trailer for the biopic “I Wanna Dance With Someone,” Stanley Tucci also debuts as Clive Davis.
The first trailer is I Want to Dance With Someone, the upcoming Whitney Houston biopic. Set to premiere this December, Sony describes the film as an “unrestrained portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman behind The Voice.”
Naomi Ackie plays the iconic American singer. The actress is best known for playing Bonnie on Netflix’s hit series The End of the F***ing World, among other projects.
Along with Ackie, Stanley Tucci plays record producer and executive Clive Davis, credited with helping Houston’s career. Meanwhile, the real Clive Davis is serving as a producer on the film.
Other cast members include Ashton Sanders as Houston’s husband, Bobby Brown, Tamara Tuney as her mother and Clark Peters as her father. Nafessa Williams will play the singer’s close friend and assistant Robyn Crawford.
The trailer tells of Houston becoming a star after being scouted by Davis and eventually becoming the target of critics, with a man telling her that her music was “not dark enough”.
“Look, I can’t sing black, and I can’t sing white. I know how to sing,” Houston countered.
“I Wanna Dance With Someone” is directed by Casey Lemmons and written by Bohemian Rhapsody writer Anthony McCarten.
