HBO has announced the sequel to the “The Case Against Adnan Said” documentary series, after the infamous subject was released from prison.
Adnan Syed was convicted of murder in 2009 for the murder of then high school classmate and ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. In prison, he repeatedly stated that he was innocent. The case garnered a lot of media attention, with HBO making a 2019 documentary called The Case Against Adnan Syed.
Recently, the case has regained media attention thanks to the serial podcast. According to the Baltimore Sun, the podcast caught the attention of a circuit judge, “after prosecutors challenged his guilt, due to the revelation of other suspects in the homicide and the unreliable use of him at trial. evidence, so he overturned the sentence.” Now, 41-year-old Said is out of prison after 23 years.
Prosecutors are still deciding whether to try Syed again based on new information that suggests others were involved in Lee’s murder. Amy Berg, head of The Case Against Adnan Syed, was in court when Syed’s conviction was overturned. Berg is expected to return to direct the sequel documentary, which will air on HBO Max sometime next year.
