Jimmy Choo wisteria pumps with gold ‘diamond’ chain detail

Sandra Choi wanted to convey an important message with her Jimmy Choo Spring ’23 collection: Never underestimate strong women.

Inspired by fantasy characters from manga and anime novels, Choi says the new season is all about exaggerated proportions. “Higher in height and bolder in length,” she said. “Sensory experiences are elevated, fantasies are fueled. It’s about living a dream, dreaming about everything you want to be. If I get the right stuff, I can actually do whatever I want.”

Choi has launched the “Diamond” chain collection this season, taking the concept of diamonds as a brand icon into new territory. The designer says it’s made with matte gold hardware, reminiscent of the finish of a brilliant-cut diamond. Chains play an important role in shoes, jewelry, bags and other accessories – taking different forms depending on the look.

For example, it becomes an anklet on pointed-toe pumps and is used as an eye-catching decoration on block-heel loafers and Skyco’s patented versions of the 140mm heel.

Denim is another key story in the collection, blending classic silhouettes with new platforms – evoking the creative director’s nostalgia for the Millennium Bug.

“It’s about mixing denim day and night, and denim is more creative and innovative,” she said, pointing to the spray-painted boots.

Jersey is another interesting material story. Choi points out that athletic fabrics, traditionally used for daywear, can take on a formal and elegant look when intricately intertwined on a sandal.

While Choi is eagerly looking forward to the spring of ’23, she’s also looking back on Queen Elizabeth II’s incredible reign.

“She was so inspiring, and now that she’s gone, we’ve discovered more of her abilities. There’s only one queen.”

On September 19, the day of the royal family’s funeral, Cui Zheng flew to New York, but didn’t miss a moment. “It was spectacular,” she said.
