Netflix on Thursday shared the official trailer for Andrew Dominic’s “Blonde,” an upcoming drama starring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe .
Rated NC-17, Blonde is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ best-selling novel of the same name. Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, the film reimagines Marilyn Monroe’s life, exploring her public and private life, as well as her childhood, fame and various relationships.
“I’ve played Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe,” de Armas said in the trailer, which takes place between scenes with Hollywood icon Norma Jean Switching between, she’s trying to make a name for herself. “I couldn’t face doing another scene with Marilyn Monroe.”
“Marilyn doesn’t exist,” De Armas added. “When I walked out of the dressing room, I was Norma Jeanne. I was here when the cameras rolled. Marilyn Monroe only existed on the screen.”
In addition to De Armas, the movie stars Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel, Evan Williams, Lily Fisher , Toby Huss, David Warsowski, Casper Phillipson, Dan Butler, Sarah Paxton and Rebecca Wisocki.
“We worked on the film for hours, almost every day of the year,” De Armas previously told Netflix Queue about the film. “I read Joyce’s novels and researched hundreds of photos, videos, recordings, films—anything I could get my hands on. Every scene was inspired by existing photographs. Every detail and discuss what happened in it. The first question is always, “How does Norma Jeanne feel here? “We wanted to tell the human side of her story. Fame made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible person.”
Blonde will have its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival next month before hitting Netflix on September 28. Watch the trailer above.
