Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” sequel has a 2024 premiere date set, a full five years after the first film was released.
After axing Batgirl for HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery Channel announced Wednesday that Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” will premiere in theaters on October 4, 2024. The release date is exactly five years after the first film premiered, according to Deadline.
The film, which will reportedly see Joaquin Phoenix return as the Joker, will reportedly begin production this December. Per Variety, the sequel will come in the form of a musical, with Lady Gaga expected to play the role of Harley Quinn.
Apart from the film’s intriguing French title (which translates to a mental illness involving two or more people sharing the same delusional beliefs or hallucinations), few details about the plot are currently available. Warner Bros. Discovery Channel has yet to reveal the rest of the cast for the upcoming sequel.
The flagship version of Joker grossed $335.4 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie in the world. After being nominated for 11 Oscars, the film won two trophies and a sequel is in development.
For the upcoming film, Phoenix will take home a whopping $20 million, more than four times what he made for the first film.
