Mike Tyson accused Hulu of stealing his life story for the “Mike” biographical series, comparing Hulu executives to masters who sold slaves on auction blocks.
Mike Tyson took to Instagram to slam Hulu’s upcoming biography series MIKE, accusing the streamer of stealing his life story and comparing its executives to the masters who sold slaves on the auction block.
The boxer shared two posts on Instagram, first claiming that Hulu “tried desperately to pay” UFC president Dana White to promote MIKE, but didn’t give him “a dollar.” Tyson continued, “He refused because he respected friendship and treated people with dignity. I’ll never forget what he did for me, just like I’ll never forget what Hulu stole from me. In a second post, he doubled down on claims that Hulu wasn’t getting paid for using his life story. “Don’t let Hulu fool you. I don’t stand behind their story about my life. It’s not 1822, it’s 2022. They stole my life story without paying me,” he wrote. “For Hulu executives, I’m just someone they can sell on the auction block.”
Tyson even expressed his disdain for the series as early as February 2021, calling it “tone blind”:
- “Hulu’s announcement that a Tyson story miniseries is being made without authorization is unfortunate but not surprising. This announcement comes on the heels of social disparity in our country is how Hulu’s corporate greed led to the A prime example of this deaf cultural appropriation of Sen’s life story. Announcing this during Black History Month just confirms Hulu’s focus on the dollar, not the right to black stories. Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to the black experience , especially after everything that happened in 2020.”
