Dwayne Johnson Reveals Why He Turned Down Black Adam’s Cameo in ‘Shazam’! 2′, if it happens, call it “damage” to the character.
Dwayne Johnson sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss the titular role in the DC Universe as Black Adam’s release draws near.
In the interview, Johnson opened up about why it’s so important for characters to have their own movie instead of piggybacking on another. He hinted that Black Adam was supposed to make a cameo appearance in Shazam’s second film! However, he rejected the idea, saying it would end up doing “harm” to the character. He explained,
- “When we received the first draft of the film, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: two origin stories in one film. Now that’s the goal – so it wasn’t a complete surprise. But when I read By the time I got to that sentence, my gut was, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We’re going to do incredible damage to Black Adam.’
- Combining two origin stories in one movie would be great for Shazam, but not so good for Black Adam. “
The actor went on to add, acknowledging that the project was so close to him that he was really uncomfortable with the idea of Black Adam being part of someone else’s storyline. He expressed his thoughts on the cameo, “I said, ‘I have to share my thoughts here. It’s very unpopular because everyone is like, ‘Hey, this script is great, let’s go make this movie’ . “I said, ‘I really think you should make Shazam!, make that movie yourself in the tone you want. I think we should also separate it.” With the upcoming release of “Black Adam,” studio exec Seems to agree with Johnson. The film will star Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell and Marwan Kenzari alongside Johnson.
Black Adam will be released on October 21st.
