Aquaman director James Wan has now confirmed previous rumors that the upcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was delayed. Announcing the news on Instagram, Wan revealed that the film’s new release date will now be Christmas 2023, and while it hasn’t been confirmed elsewhere, rumor has it that Shazam! Wrath of the Gods will take over from its previous premiere date of March 17, 2023.

While it was undoubtedly disappointing for DCEU fans to learn the delay, Wan did offer consolation with a fresh perspective on some of the sequel’s concept art, posting fantastical forests and mountains as well as illustrations of massive battles and underwater conflicts. “This is a small selection of some artwork in the grand epic world building we’re creating, and I need time to get it right,” Wan wrote in the caption. “The images barely scratch the surface of the film (without even showing the strange and wonderful characters and creatures in this world). I can’t wait to show you, but you’ll have to wait a little longer.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is now coming on December 25, 2023.
