Laverne Cox picked up the mic at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards today. The event took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and Cox wore Jean Paul Gaultier and classic shoes to interview her colleagues on the golden carpet.
The “Orange is the New Black” actress’ outfit is composed of structured, striped black-and-white materials by the legendary design house in collaboration with Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing. Featuring hip pads and a high neck, this mini dress is like a work of art with long sleeves and a pointed bra, a Gaultier signature.
The bust is likely a tribute to Madonna, who wore a similar silhouette on her Blond Ambition tour in the 1990s. Cox paired the futuristic silhouette with a sheer black bodysuit, and minimal jewelry including a silver ring and striking diamond stud earrings. The LGBTQ+ advocate wore her hair in a high ponytail to keep her makeup smoky.
Despite the wild ensemble on top, Cox kept it simple, donning black pointed-toe stilettos for the occasion. Unisex shoes allow the Glamour Award-winning designer to enjoy the sun while keeping her comfortable on a manageable heel.
