James Cameron has long been known for his feature-length films, but with Avatar: Way of Water slated for release later this year, the director has now spoken out against criticism that his films are too long. Speaking to Empire Magazine about his latest project, the creative said he was already expecting a response from some viewers and critics, but explained that in the age of binge-watching, longer Movies shouldn’t be a problem.
“I don’t want anyone sitting down and binge-watching [TV] for eight hours and complaining about the length,” Cameron said. “I could almost write this part of the review. ‘The harrowing three hour long movie…’ Like, give me a fucking break. I’ve watched my kids sit and do it for five one hour straight episodes.”
Of course, it’s a little different if you’re binge-watching something at home, as you can pause for a toilet or other breath at any time, but Cameron added that it should now be socially acceptable to leave your seat when nature calls of. “This is a major social paradigm shift that has to happen: it’s OK to get up and pee,” he added.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released on December 16.
