CHOLPON-ATA, Kyrgyzstan (AP) — On the shores of one of the deepest lakes in the world, high in the Tianshan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan, models wore a blend of ancient and modern at the World Nomads Fashion Festival, swagger.
Now in its third year, the event brings designers and fashionistas from around 20 countries to sparkling Lake Issyk-Kul to see clothing inspired by Kyrgyzstan’s thousands of years of nomadic culture.
Some models wore stiletto heels unsuitable for true nomads, but some of their elaborate headdresses appeared to mimic horns in traditional nomadic clothing. Flowy, voluminous skirts appeared in many outfits, either in elaborate patterns or in bright colors.
In addition to haute couture, the exhibition offers visitors the chance to see a range of yurts — wood-framed tents made from skin or felt unique to nomads — and brightly coloured rugs.
